UGC creator
A UGC creator is someone paid to produce user-generated-style content — typically casual, phone-shot video — that the commissioning brand then publishes on its own channels or uses in paid advertising, rather than the creator posting it to their own following.
The label is slightly misleading. Genuine user-generated content comes from actual customers for free. A UGC creator is a paid producer imitating that register, because the casual, unpolished look converts better in advertising than a studio-shot commercial does.
How it differs from influencer work
- →An influencer is paid for access to their audience. A UGC creator is paid for the footage.
- →Influencer posts appear on the influencer's account. UGC appears on the brand's.
- →Follower count sets influencer rates. Output quality and turnaround set UGC rates.
- →UGC work is available to anyone with a phone and no audience at all.
How it differs from clipping
Both are paid content work available without a following, which is why people compare them, but the jobs are opposite in structure. UGC means filming something new for someone else to post. Clipping means editing something that already exists and posting it yourself. UGC pays a fixed fee per deliverable; clipping campaigns pay on performance.
They suit different temperaments. UGC rewards being comfortable on camera and hitting a brief. Clipping rewards editorial judgement and volume, and pays unevenly — nothing for a clip that flops, a great deal for one that travels.
Compare the two models before choosing one.
