Aspect ratio

Aspect ratio is not a quality setting and it is not resolution. A 9:16 clip and a 16:9 clip can both be perfectly sharp; they simply occupy different shapes. The shape is what decides whether a clip fills a phone screen or floats in the middle of it, which in a scrolling feed is the difference between being watched and being passed.

The ratios that matter

• →9:16 — full-screen vertical. TikTok, Reels, Shorts, Snapchat. Usually 1080 by 1920.
• →4:5 — tall but not full-screen. Strong for Instagram feed posts. 1080 by 1350.
• →1:1 — square. Neutral, works almost anywhere, wastes screen height.
• →16:9 — horizontal. YouTube long-form, LinkedIn, embedded players.
• →2:1 and wider — cinematic, and a poor fit for any social placement.

Choosing per platform, not per video

The same clip can be exported in several ratios, and where the effort is available it should be. A 9:16 export for the short-form feeds and a 16:9 for YouTube and LinkedIn covers nearly everything. What does not work is posting one ratio everywhere and hoping.

What happens when the ratio is wrong

Platforms do not reject the wrong ratio, they just letterbox it. A horizontal clip on TikTok appears as a band with black or blurred space above and below, and it competes for attention against clips using the whole screen. The content might be better and still lose.

Cropping to fix it introduces its own problem: something has to leave the frame. With a single speaker centred, a crop is usually harmless. With two people in a wide shot, a centre crop can put both of them half out of frame, which is why speaker tracking or a stacked layout is often the better answer.

Resolution still matters separately

Getting the ratio right and the resolution wrong produces a correctly shaped but soft clip. 1080 by 1920 is the practical standard for vertical; going higher rarely survives platform compression, and going lower is visible immediately.
